Everyone’s favorite iPhone dev team - err - the iPhone Dev Team, has released the Mac version of its latest conquest. That’s right people, just like we told you last week the Dev Team has made quick work of Apple’s 2.0 firmware and the latest version of its Pwnage Tool is now available to the public. Have you been feeling restricted by Apple-authorized apps? Not having the ability at this point to run authorized third-party apps in the background makes plenty of applications such as IM and music streaming apps (Last.fm, Pandora) pretty much useless. Beyond that, in some countries you might not even have access to the app store! Enter the Dev Team. Using the Pwnage Tool, you can add Installer and Cydia to complement Apple’s App Store app and enjoy the tremendous number of unauthorized apps out there alongside Apple-authorized apps with no problems. The Pwnage Tool doesn’t yet unlock the iPhone 3G however, so you’re still bound to whichever carrier you picked up your phone from. Also, the new Pwnage Tool is only available for OS X right now so Windows users will have to wait a bit longer to join in on the fun.

All AT&T iPhone 3G Stock Diverted to Pre-Pay Customers
While most of the attention has been on iPhone 3G stock at Apple Stores
(rightfully so, since Apple is hoarding most of them) anyone not in
driving distance of an Apple Store has to get theirs in AT&T land.
So here's the sorta good news, if you're patient: If you do AT&T's
direct fulfillment deal—pay for it in full, then they call you to pick
it up when it arrives—you'll get your phone in about two weeks on
average, guaranteed. And the bad news:
All the phones are going to the direct fulfillment program, so don't expect to just walk into a store and buy one. They're not getting them, and won't, until the shortage is over:
We hope to begin re-stocking our stores as soon as we can, but first priority goes to those customers who purchased through direct fulfillment.
Our advice? If you've gotta have one NOW, take Friday off, drive to an Apple Store before it opens, and make an urban camping trip out of it—bring beef jerky, a fishing pole (to fend off panhandlers) and guitar to sing Kumbaya, which, with any luck, will drive people out of line. [AT&T]

Most Expensive iPhone App Champion: MyAccountsToGo Costs More Than an Unsubsidized iPhone
At $449, MyAccountsToGo Dynamics GP and MyAccountsToGo SAP BusinessOne are the most expensive iPhone Apps
available as of right now. It's under the Finance category and is
designed for sales, marketing and finance people to access their
transactions, statements, and other corporate terms that we have no
clue about. Since the most we know about "business" is "business time",
we can't say whether or not the $449 is worth the cash, but we do know
that you should buy both apps and just make it an even $898. There's a free version if you want to know what the excitement's all about. Just don't accidentally buy the paid version.

Tracker Checks Apple Store iPhone 3G Stock Every 15 Minutes
While Apple's website updates its Apple Store iPhone 3G stock count every night after 9PM, the guys running the iPhone 3G availability tracker at Top Muffin
say the data is actually updated throughout the day. So it hits the
feed every 15 minutes, theoretically providing the most up-to-date
stock count around. Or you could just, you know, call the store and
have a real live person tell you to bring some sunscreen, an umbrella
and some s'mores since a wave of diarrhea cut the line down to a mere 7
hours. [Top Muffin via 9to5Mac]

Save Money By Sending Free SMS on iPhone
Here's
how you can use the reverse concept of using AIM on your computer to
directly message someone's phone via SMS to save money on text
messaging fees for your iPhone—or any phone that has a proper data
implementation of AIM. Just load up the AIM app on your phone, then
send a text message to the number of the person you want to text.
Example: +12125551234. Your buddy can reply to that message and you'll
get the response on your chat window, but it's not as useful as it can
be until the iPhone gets background messaging in September. Still,
spamming Jesus with free text messages is always fun. [Max OS X Hints]

MobileMe Updates for Windows Have Apple Pushing Borderline Malware Again
Remember when Apple got shady with Windows users by pushing out Safari via its own software update
tool to everyone, even if you didn't have it installed already? Windows
users are now up in arms again about iTunes 7.7 bringing along an
unwanted MobileMe
control panel without asking, and I don't blame them. Granted, a
control panel is not the same as an entire application, but getting
loaded up with extra software that you don't want is still a shady
move. And unfortunately, that's just the start of MobileMe's pushiness.

Our own Jason Chen also noticed a surprise when he docked his iPhone
this morning—this big fat ad for MobileMe in iTunes under the "Summary"
tab for his phone. No code installed here, but getting spammed for a
service that's had hiccup after embarrassing hiccup over the last several weeks is not the best way to keep those already in your customer base happy. Tsk tsk Apple. [Computerworld]
Lightning Review: Fabrix iPhone 3G Fabric Sleeves
The Gadget:
Protective fabric-based sleeves for your iPhone 3G/original iPhone.
Unlike a case, you slip your iPhone inside via the top and have to take
it back out entirely to use.
The Price: $21.90
The Verdict:
Protective goodness. We're usually very down on cases for any kind of
phone or PMP—why cover up something well designed with something quite
ugly—but sleeves are an entirely different matter. Fabrix' version
provides ample cushioning for your phone when it's not in use, but
you're supposed to take your iPhone entirely out of the sleeve when
you're actually handling it. Couple that with the fact that these
sleeves are actually very nice looking and you've got a great
combination of usability and aesthetics. Pick up a few to change out
when you're tired of the old one. [Fabrix]

Rumor: MacBook touch Coming in October
Those clamoring for an Apple tablet may finally get what you've been waiting for. According to a MacDailyNews source who leaked wireless iTunes a week before its official announcement, we can expect a sort of "MacBook touch" in October. And the source wasn't light on the details, either:
Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion's haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at "low" price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest. In all honesty, we may have passed this story up, but we've heard vague reports from reliable sources that Quanta is busy building a touch product for Apple. This latest information seems seems to compliment what we've heard. [MacDailyNews]

Make Your Old iPhone Dock Accommodate Your iPhone 3G's Bulbous Ass
There's no dock in the iPhone 3G's box. And the iPhone 3G doesn't fit in the original iPhone's dock. You could pay $29 for a new one. Or you could just make the damn thing fit
in the dock you already have. All you need is steady hands, a Dremel
and a buffing cloth. Carve, buff, voila. Here are the happy, frugal
results:
Of course, your original iPhone might not fit so harmoniously after this mod. [Hard Mac
AT&T's Free Wi-Fi Hotspots for iPhones Now Online for Real
It's been a saga of the on again, off again, on again, off again type, but it looks like AT&T's free wi-fi hotspot access is live at last. 17,000 sites across the US are available to iPhone users, including the fabled Starbucks
sites. According to AT&T's website, which also offers a hotspot
locator tool, AT&T knows "Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter,
which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the
nation's largest Wi-Fi hotspot network." Interesting... after all the
shenanigans, it looks more like AT&T thinks wi-fi is just "luke
warm", or maybe "tepid." But at least it's finally come good. [AT&T via MacRumors]
