Lightning Review: Fabrix iPhone 3G Fabric Sleeves
The Gadget:
Protective fabric-based sleeves for your iPhone 3G/original iPhone.
Unlike a case, you slip your iPhone inside via the top and have to take
it back out entirely to use.
The Price: $21.90
The Verdict:
Protective goodness. We're usually very down on cases for any kind of
phone or PMP—why cover up something well designed with something quite
ugly—but sleeves are an entirely different matter. Fabrix' version
provides ample cushioning for your phone when it's not in use, but
you're supposed to take your iPhone entirely out of the sleeve when
you're actually handling it. Couple that with the fact that these
sleeves are actually very nice looking and you've got a great
combination of usability and aesthetics. Pick up a few to change out
when you're tired of the old one. [Fabrix]

The Seidio Slim Rubberized Hard Case for iPhone is available here at the Phone different Store for $29.95. With so many choices to protect and stylize your iPhone, how does this case measure up? Read on for the full review!
When choosing a case for your iPhone, there are numerous options out there. For me, protection and appearance are paramount. I’ve had cases that protect against impact but, due to a slight amount of movement between the case and phone, scratching occurs (because you and I both know that dust ALWAYS manages to get under the case!).
The Seidio Slim Rubberized Hard Case for iPhone is a hard plastic case with a rubberized paint finish. The back half of the case is lined with soft velvet, providing a non-scratch cushion between the case and the back of the iPhone. The case is available in three colors: black, burgundy, and blue.
The case snaps easily together between front and back. The seam between halves is fairly smooth around the perimeter of the iPhone. There are cutouts for the ear speaker, Home button, connector port and speaker/mic, camera, headphone jack, power switch, and for the volume rocker and mute switch. The touchscreen is fully accessible on the front.
Performance
Although
I love the design of the iPhone, one of the things I decry is it’s “bar
of soap” feel in the hand. The Seidio Slim Rubberized Hard Case does a
fantastic job of protecting the iPhone while the rubberized finish
makes it more “grippy” without adding much bulk.
One concern I had about a hard, snap-together case was how well it would hold together — I didn’t want the case coming apart at the slightest bump or twist in my hand.
Fortunately, I have had no problems with this Seidio case. Once it snaps together, it takes a little effort to separate the two pieces. Although I haven’t tried it myself, I suspect a drop on a hard surface will result in separation (and possibly a scratched iPhone), but few cases will protect well against a drop on a hard surface anyway. You must ultimately sacrifice a bit of protection a leather or nylon case may provide in exchange for the rubberized paint and slender profile of the Seidio case.
I previously mentioned my concern about my iPhone getting scratched by dust and dirt trapped between the iPhone and case. I’m happy to report that after weeks of use, I have yet to find any scratches on my iPhone as a result of using this case. The rubberized paint has also held up remarkably well with daily use.
Summing It Up
In spite of the stratospheric rise in gas and food prices, I’m happy to report that your money is well-spent on the Seidio Slim Rubberized Hard Case for iPhone, available here at the Phonedifferent store for $29.95. With full access to the iPhone, “grippy” feel, and minimal added bulk, it’s a great case to complement the sleekness of your iPhone!
Pros
- Full access to iPhone
- “Grippy” rubberized coating
- Once snapped together, it stays put
- Offers less protection if iPhone is dropped

There's no iPhone 3G in the iPhone accessories store

Griffin's TuneBuds Mobile headphones make it less obvious that you are using an Apple product.
(Credit: Griffin)
Well, sure, there are accessories, but I want the iPhone 3G! Don't you?
You are not alone. I've been to many AT&T and Apple stores over the last few days--the furthest of those being in Sacramento. (I live in the Bay Area and went there to visit some friends over the weekend.). At each AT&T store I was told to wait for more stock, and at every Apple store I got discouraged by the long line and withdrew. It's crazy.
Now, I can't help but wonder why Apple is doing this. Obviously they have tons of iPhone 3Gs at the Apple stores, but they only supply limited amounts to the AT&T stores. My only guess is that Steve Jobs gets a kick out of our frustration from waiting in line for a product that he's deliberately stripped of many basic features, knowing that we'll get even more frustrated when we actually get one. And yet we can't help wanting it. How embarrassing!
So, to ease the pain and make the wait worthwhile, why not just go get some accessories instead? You will want to have some of them anyway.
If you haven't found anything you want in my last blog, Griffin today introduced another slew of stuff that you can use with your iPhone 3G. The list includes:
- Wave for iPhone 3G: $24.99
- Nu Form with EasyDock: $24.99
- Elan Clip for iPhone 3G: $24.99
- Streamline for iPhone: $29.99
- TuneBuds: $19.99
- TuneBuds Mobile: $39.99
- StereoConnect: $14.99
Personally, I like the TuneBuds Mobile, as the original white headphones that come with the iPhone are just too telling (like "Look at me! I have an Apple product!") and don't offer very good bass.

radJacket CHARGE Case Keeps iPod Touch Juiced, Protected
Gnarly,
80s surf name aside, the radJacket CHARGE (not my capitalizing) is
pretty cool, as iPod cases go. As well as keeping your Pretty safe from
keys, bag- and pocket-umska, the case acts as a charger, giving your
iPod Touch a whopping 46 hours of music, 12 of video and 10 of web
browsing, on just a three-hour charge. See it in pieces after the jump.
So far the radJacket CHARGE is Japan-only but it HAS to come over here (those were mine, btw.) [Pocket-lint]

Griffin's antenna-stub sporting ClearBoost case for the iPhone just hit the streets, and opinions are already pouring in. The case involves the antenna, a bumper and a screen protector, and while the resulting combination is not much for loooks, iLounge found it to improve performance in certain situations. Apparently in very low coverage areas the ClearBoost isn't much help, but in wonky two or three bar situations ClearBoost added one or two bars. Sounds like a win to us, but you're going to have to have some serious need of signal to sacrifice iPhone aesthetics this totally.

iShield Mirror: For Obsessively Vain iPhone Owners Only
The
iShield Mirror is, at its core, a two-piece hardshell protective case
for the iPhone. However, the manufacturer takes it a step further by
adding a film to the surface that functions as a mirror when the phone
is not in use. When activated, the film is transparent enough and thin
enough to allow for normal usage.
If
you're into hard cases for your phone, I suppose that adding a gimmick
like this can prove useful for the ladies (and the kind of dudes that
wear sweaters around their necks), but it seems a bit unhealthy to me.
iPhone and Touch versions are available for for $29.99. Hit iLounge for

Review: Seidio Rubberized Spring Clip Holster for Unskinned iPhone
I admit I was a little skeptical of Seidio’s $30 Rubberized Spring Clip Holster for Unskinned iPhone
after my first encounter with it. The simple holster uses a mostly-open
design with only two small, curved brackets at the bottom and a spring
clip at the top for keeping the iPhone in place. How could this
possibly be a secure way to carry your iPhone?
Turns out it’s surprisingly secure. The case is molded precisely to the iPhone’s contours, and the tension in the spring clip makes it easy to snap the phone into place; pulling the phone out requires only a slight lift of the clip—enough that you won’t do it by accident, but not enough that it’s difficult. The inside of the holster is covered by a soft felt that won’t scratch your iPhone’s back (or screen, depending on which way you prefer to put the phone in the holster). Face in or face out, all of the iPhone’s controls and ports are easily accessible (with the obvious exceptions, of course, being the Home button and touchscreen if your opt for the face-in orientation). The rest of the case is finished with a rubberized coating that’s smooth and pleasing to the touch.
The only other feature of note on the holster is the rotating belt clip on the back. This sturdy clip turns 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise, and the bottom of the clip features a slight hook so that the whole assembly won’t fly off your belt.
My only complaint with the holster was minor: if you ever wear a shirt or sweater that falls over the holster, it can sometimes be tricky to take the phone in and out of the holster without the fabric getting in the way; I dropped my iPhone at least one while trying to do this. (I supposed this could be a problem with any holster, but for some reason I noticed it more with the Seidio.) Another think to keep in mind—and this applies to most holsters—is that the the phone is unprotected when it’s not in the holster.
From a protection standpoint, the Rubberized Spring Clip Holster doesn’t provide anything special. But it is a simple, easy to use, and well-constructed holster for those who like to have their phone always close at hand.
