YouTube Ads On iPhone
The biggest news this week in the online world was definitely YouTube
introducing Ads into videos. While it is Flash based and in limited
testing we have to wonder just how long before these make their way to
the iPhone.
I had asked a similar question earlier in the week, “Where are the iPhone YouTube Ads” and I may receive an answer soon enough.
The only problem is these Ads are flash based so they will
definitely be a no go on the iPhone for now at least. What does need to
work however is the advertising model, the less intrusive you can be
the better. The only reason commercials work so well is due to a fixed
schedule. You get a few minutes worth of Ads every 15-20 minutes but
YouTube clips are totally different.
Many clips are only a few minutes in length with some ranging into
the double digits. Users want the content aggregated quickly and
nothing to get in the way, if the same model were to be implemented on
the iPhone (if deemed successful first) it would require one of three
methods.
1. Flash Support know many of you are drooling over this option and it would be convenient for Google if Apple did implement Flash support but it would be one of the most idiotic decisions Apple ever made (think the Cube). If you are going to implement Flash just for Ads why go through the trouble of converting all video content hosted by YouTube to H.264? It may look better on the AppleTV but I have seen very little improvement on the iPhone.
2. Software UpdateOh I can see the headlines on this one, which one of you would install this update knowing it would bring Ads on your iPhone? Yeah me neither.
3. Streaming Ads
This out of the 3 is the most logical implementation. While your YouTube clip is being download a small fadeout Ad or whatever layout Google decides can appear at the end which is not part of the clip itself but randomly chosen.
It requires no Software update and little changes if any but that could be done over the air.
