What's a tumblelog?
To make a simple analogy: If blogs are journals, tumblelogs are scrapbooks.
You can also look at tumblelogs as slightly more structured blogs that make it easier, faster, and more fun to post and share stuff you find or create.
You can find more information on Wikipedia.
What's Tumblr?
Our pride and joy. And something we're really excited about.
Tumblr is your friendly, free, and terrifically easy tool for creating tumblelogs.
Is Tumblr better/worse than Blogger, TypePad, FaceBook, etc.?
It's totally different. That's why we built it, and why we love it so much.
Blogs are great, but they can be a lot of work. And they're really built to handle longer-form text posts. Tumblelogs, on the other hand, let you easily and quickly post and share anything you find or create.
Do I retain ownership of things I put on Tumblr?
Absolutely. You or the respective copyright-holder retains complete ownership and copyright of everything you post to Tumblr. We won't even publicize your tumblelog unless you check "Promote me" on your settings page.
Why doesn't Tumblr do X?
Some functionality has been intentionally skipped to make Tumblr as simple as possible to use. If there's something you'd really like Tumblr to do, please let us know!
What's it cost?
Tumblr is free, and we're keeping it that way.
In the future, we may offer additional "advanced" features for a fee. But basic service will always be available 100% free and feature-packed.
I registered, but haven't received the Activation email. What should I do?
If your Activation email doesn't come through immediately, you can use the Login form to resend it. Just log in with the email address and password you registered with. You'll see a notice that your Activation email was re-sent.
You should also double-check that the email didn't end up in your SPAM folder.
If you get an error when logging in, it might mean you mistyped your email address when you registered. Try registering again to make sure.
If you're still having trouble with the Activation email, please contact us at Tumblr Support.
What are "Followers"?
The "Followers" panel on your Dashboard displays users who have added you as a friend, and are following your posts.
What should I do if something's not working?
If you come across a bug, or run into absolutely any trouble with Tumblr, please contact Tumblr Support.
How reliable is Tumblr?
Tumblr is our pride-and-joy, and we work diligently to make sure service is stable and reliable. However, it's impossible for us to guarantee the quality and reliability of our service. If you have absolutely any trouble with Tumblr, please contact us immediately at support@tumblr.com.
How do feeds work?
When a new feed is added to Tumblr, its most recent post will be imported, followed by any posts added from that point forward.
The time between updates can vary greatly depending on the service. We try to crawl feeds once every hour, but we do respect each feed's "Time To Live" (TTL) declaration which may affect the update interval.
How do I use a "custom domain name" on Tumblr?
Custom domains let you host your tumblelog with a URL like "www.mywebsite.com". This can be tricky to set up, and is only recommended for advanced users. Really -- our staff isn't able to support many of the issues that may crop up when setting up a domain name. So please ask your buddy who sets up websites for help if you've never done this before.
First, you'll need to buy a domain from a registrar like GoDaddy, pairNIC, or Register. This usually costs between $10-$40/year. Then you'll need to follow the registrars instructions to point the domain's A-record (IP address) to "72.32.231.8".
Once you've done this, you may need to wait up to 72 hours (although frequently less) for the change to take effect. If the domain is set up properly, you should see the Tumblr home page when you visit your domain. Almost done!
Now log in to Tumblr and click "Change settings". Under the "URL" settings, check off "Use a custom domain name", and enter your custom domain (ie. "mywebsite.com"). Click "Save settings", and if everything went right, visiting your domain should now show your tumblelog in all its glory.
Once your custom domain is set up, users who visit your dot-tumblr URL will be automatically redirected to your new custom domain. For example, "david.tumblr.com" will automatically redirect you to "davidslog.com", which should proudly display your tumblelog.
We also fully support custom domains with a sub-domain other than "www". So you can use a domain like "blog.mywebsite.com" if you'd like.
