]]>Commuto is a smart swapping community that's been designed to undermine the in-person swap meet of the past with an online system that finds other people with items you want automatically. Like Craigslist's wanted section you can list items you're looking for, be it electronics, text books, video games, or any other common good. You can also list items you own but are looking to pawn off. To aid in that, there's a built in search that will let you pull in things like box art and product information so you don't have to type anything in. I found it to be less than complete for some older items, but for things like books, video games, and DVDs, it picked up nearly everything I searched for. After you've posted a wanted item, other people within your area will be alerted to the fact that you're in need and offer to swap one of their own items. Alternately, if they've already listed ownership of said item, the service will do a little virtual handshake to introduce you to the other person. Like Craiglist, Commuto is all about keeping things local, so there's no integrated payment system or way to auction off your goods. Instead, you just get in touch with the other person and arrange a swap. It's delightfully simple and will work great as long as there are enough users in your area. There were only eight items in my neck of the woods, so your millage may vary.

]]>As a Google employee recently said, "Google Maps is evolving from a driving directions and business search tool, to a comprehensive representation of all the world's information, on a map." That's why Google Maps started to integrate different layers of information when you search for an address and it added a new "More" button to enable layers for photos and Wikipedia articles. Google Maps now includes in search results personalized maps, geolocated content from the web and mapped web pages.There's a new option to search for real estate: click on "show search options" and select "real estate" from the drop-down. The search results don't seem to be powered by come from Google Base. Google shows structured information about houses and lets you refine the results by price, number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Even if there aren't too many advanced features, it's interesting to see that Google Maps wants to index all the information that could be displayed on a map.Many real estate sites use Google Maps API and the first Google Maps mashup was HousingMaps, a site that displays Craigslist housing listings on a map. Last month, Trulia was one of the first sites that integrated Google Street View "to add efficiency to the real estate search experience and help home buyers discover more information about particular neighborhoods".(The post was updated to reflect that the data is obtained from Google Base.)

]]>Too cheap for a Flickr pro membership and scared of Zooomr? Check out TinyAlbum, a super simple and minimalist photo-hosting service that will let you upload as many photos as you want (at up to 8MB a file) into slick little albums. The UI shares a lot in common with Flickr, and incorporates a handful of really user-friendly features like drag-and-drop reordering, on the fly rotation, and links to various sizes for download. It's missing an open API, something that makes Flickr so incredibly useful in conjunction with third-party services, but the speed and ease of use are top notch for a small, independent app. I managed to put together three albums with full-resolution shots in just a few minutes. The service is missing something similar to Flickr's explore page, but you can discover new content uploaded by other users in both a stream on the front page, as well as a Digg-spy-like service that shows you the most recently active users as well as what tags they've affixed to their shots.

]]>If you're familiar with Techmeme, Tailrank, and other services that track content trends on the Web, you should bookmark a new service called Twitlinks. It uses a hand-picked selection of technology personalities on Twitter and compiles their tweets into a news feed. If there are news links or stories that come out of those tweets, they'll end up on the front page, in a reverse chronological view mere minutes after they're posted. The list of tweet sources is made public, and currently comes in at just fewer than 100 bloggers, entrepreneurs, and personalities including my boss Rafe, as well as the Webware and CNET News.com RSS Twitterbots. There will be more added in the future, as decided by creator Gary Brewer, whose other works include WebsiteValued and Global Surfari--a mash-up that helps you find good surf spots. Beside the core site there's also a mobile version of Twitlinks and a Google gadget. Power users can also add the RSS feed to be kept up-to-date with the latest items--although as a word to the wise, new items come in every five minutes, so you'd be wise to set up a filter or special folder in your RSS reader. I expect to see other similar spinoff sites make their way if Twitlinks evolves into a network. The same technique could be used to emulate the experience for entertainment and celebrity gossip, as well as world and local news depending on the community of focused Twitterers out there. Essentially the site is just rebranding the experience of creating a Twitter account and befriending a group of people, but part of the reason for visiting is the curatorship--something you don't always get from other Twitter popularity services such as Twitterholic or Tweetmeme, which is far less focused.

This means that you can see what everyones current status is in a crowd. Is there anything else to know? Ummm Yes, Crowdstatus only works with twitter at the moment and you can only add people to a crowd that have twitter account and have public tweats on. Great it works with twitter but whats next? This site is a work in progress so I am not sure what to add next but I guess facebook statuses, Jaiku and Seesmic (I really like the idea of video statuses in a crowd). It's an application that uses the microblogging service's API to create a "cloud" of the most frequently used words used in a given Twitter member's feed of "tweets." It only works with Twitter accounts that are publicly accessible--some members keep their updates friends-only--and it takes a while for the app to munch through all the "tweets" and form a cloud. And like many small Twitter applications that get unexpected viral buzz, the server sometimes crashes. But when it's working, the end result can be kind of cool. My TweetCloud. (Credit: TweetClouds.com) Judging by my Tweet Cloud, it looks like I most frequently Twitter about hopping around the grid of Manhattan. My most-Twittered word is "going," followed by words like "getting," "home," "time," and um, "party." After that, it looks like I Twitter about my job: words like "office," "work," "writing," "coffee," and "facebook" (the company I spend the most time writing about) are on there, too, as is "boston," a city I like to make fun of a lot. Also in the cloud are some of my favorite things, like "running," "reading," and "pizza," and a display of my propensity for words like "dude," "awesome," "omg," and "pumped." Another new application of note is TweetStats, a more quantitative Twitter application that crunches numbers on how often you Twitter, to whom you send the most "reply" tweets, and when you're Twittering the most (3 a.m. anyone?). CenterNetworks' Allen Stern suggests it as a way to spy on other Twitter users. He's probably got the right idea there. Now if there were a way to mash up TweetClouds and TweetStats, well, that would be creepy.
